Shetland Comprises of over a hundred islands, with the "mainland" spanning over 70 miles in length. Shetland has an abundance of sea and bird life from seals, otters, dolphins and killer whales to puffins and rare migrating birds such as the Red Necked Phalarope or Whimbrel and not forgetting our native Shetland ponies. In addition dramatic and rugged coastlines make shetland a great destination for hill walkers. The Shetland landscape varies from rugged cliffs and sea caves to award winning, sandy unspoilt beaches. Perhaps one of the most renowned beaches is St Nininans isle with its sand tombolo which connects the isle to the "mainland". Another popular beach, particularly for families is Meal beach in west Burra. Offering sheltered spots for barbecues and picnics with parking and toilet facilities near by.
