Scalloway

Scalloway is the ancient capital of Shetland and Angéla's old home town. It is a beautiful town which has not lost its charm and charisma. A small and friendly community with several local shops, eateries and places to stay. There are lots of great walks through the old street lanes and many sights to see including Scalloway Castle. Constructed by the Earl of Patrick in 1600. The castle is currently closed to visitors but hopefully will re-open soon? (fingers crossed).

Food is an important part of Scalloway's economy.

Scalloway also has its own museum with a large portion of the display dedicated to the Shetland Bus, a Second World War resistance which operated to smuggle agents across from Norway to the safety of Shetland waters. Several Shetland Bus sites remain including the St. Olav slipway used during the missions, Norway house (now being used as a 24 hour gym) and the Shetland Bus memorial.

Food is an important part of Scalloway's economy, from the high quality and innovative products produced by Scalloway Meat Company, to the extremely fresh seafood processed locally at several different factories. This includes salmon from Scottish Sea Farms, shellfish from QA Fish and a variety of landed fish including extremely popular whitefish from Blydoit Fish. Good fresh ingredients are not hard to find. Uradale farm across the water produce Shetland native beef and lamb, fully traceable meat reared from once endangered Shetland stock.

The former Scalloway museum building has been lovingly restored with great attention to detail. Electric bike's can be hired to help you tour Scalloway and beyond and beautiful rooms are available above the cafe for guest to make the most of a holiday in charming Scalloway.

Another eatery just along the Main Street is the recently renovated Kiln Bar (rebranded as KB) is not far from the Shetland Bus memorial site and offers restaurant food with a varied menu including local seafood.

NAFC Marine Centre UHI is an important university facility, training merchant navy cadets in preparation for a career at sea and also home to Da Half Restaurant a restaurant serving delicious local seafood with views over Port Arthur.

From the Salloway Main Street head towards the Scalloway boating club and NAFC UHI. The road begins to winds up a hill, walk half way up and you will see a road between the houses bearing to the left. Follow the road until you reach a gate on your right in front of the last house, through the gate is a wonderful country walk around the coastline. The route includes great views passing a salmon farm, a minor lighthouse and usually lots of Shetland ponies grazing in the hillside. If you continue to walk over the hills for uninterrupted views.
