The Tall Ships Races returned to Lerwick in July 2023, and it was an incredible event. The Tall Ships Races is a series of sailing races that takes place annually in different ports across Europe. The event attracts thousands of visitors and sailors from all over the world and is a celebration of maritime culture and history. Lerwick has previously hosted the Tall Ships Races in 2011 and 1999. The events brought a significant economic boost to the region, with local businesses reporting a substantial increase in sales during the events.The 2023 Tall Ships Races featured some of the most stunning sailing vessels from around the world, with tall ships of all sizes and types, from the smallest brigantine to the largest square-rigged ships. The event included various activities, such as live music, food stalls, and traditional crafts, providing a rich cultural experience for visitors.The Tall Ships Races are not only about the races themselves; they also provide a platform for young people to learn about sailing and teamwork. The event includes a program called Sail Training International, where young people can participate in the races and receive training from experienced sailors.
The weather was kind for part of the races, notably with fantastic sunset on Wednesday evening and Tremendous warm sunny weather on Thursday, with the piers busy with visitors, locals and visiting cruise ships. There was a really buzz around town with a constant flow of people walking around the harbour coastline and making use of the provided free shuttle service between the two main areas activities took place during the Tall ships.
