Gunnister

My son popped up to shetland for a visit so I decided it was time to head back out exploring some of the rugged scenery in Shetland.

We headed north west near Gunnister, A favourite spot of ours and one that my children and I used to go camping to every summer, where we would have great fun fishing and exploring the coastline.

Michael and I headed down the hillside at Birka Vird, walking past the remains of many old stone buildings at Setter of Enisfirth, which had simply stunning views. What a location it must have been to live at. I can think of nothing better! The views looked over to Gunnister Voe and the isle of Gunnister. It was a great way to spend a few hours and re-connect with my son.

Below you can find a few of our old camping photos which shows a little bit more of the area in a fine July/August time of year. As always if you are going to wild camp it is always advisable to check who the land owner is and ask their permission, as we always did each year, making sure we left the area completely spotless and the way we found it.

I have such fond memories of my time spent here and indeed Michael told me it was some of the best holidays he can remember as a teenager.I particularly enjoyed the fact there was no mobile phone signal in the area where we camped.
