Walls

I am frequently in Walls or "Waas" as it is known locally every month with my work, but it was only a few years ago that I first explored some of the coastline during a camping holiday. I took my children to stay in a nearby Fishermans lodge, a 20 minute walk from Burrastow House, which is a grand Laird's home built in 1759 and recently seen in the popular Shetland tv series. The guest house can sleep up to nine guests and I have included a link at the bottom of this webpage. Before reaching the quaint fisherman's lodge, the coastal walk rewards you with an impressive site, the island of Vaila including the beautiful Vaila Hall which is considered to be one of the finest mansions in Shetland. At the end of the isle is Mucklaberry Castle tower which also looks rather grand and mysterious.

Angéla and I enjoyed the coastal walk which included a small pebbled beach, rugged coastline, lochs, dramatic cliffs, a sea cave, drongs and the island of Foula in the distance. A great way to spend a day in Shetland's beautiful countryside and a great opportunity to capture some wonderful memories during your time in Waas.

The walking route can be found on promote Shetland's website but I have also included the map I was given when I stayed at the Littlelure fisherman's bothy. Fisherman's lodges were a common site, dotted all along townships in Shetland. This bothy has been beautifully restored, with a natural stone floor, hand built stone walls clad in the inside with timber. A small wood burning stove provides toastie warm heating. There is also a couple of gas burner rings for making food and an externally a compost loo and rain cold water shower which definitely has to be experienced ! It still makes me giggle thinking about it. I can highly recommend a stay here and would love to come back, I have such wonderful memories here.
